This past weekend, more than a dozen members participated in the annual ice rescue training on a local body of water within the hamlet. Members practiced putting on ice rescue suits, reviewed proper hand signals for communicating on the ice, learned safe techniques for crossing the ice to make a rescue, and worked on procedures for safely removing someone from the ice.

Although temperatures stayed in the 20s or lower and over 20 inches of ice were present for this training, ice conditions should never be assumed safe without first checking the thickness. Always ensure ice is strong enough before stepping onto it.

Cortland Volunteer Ambulance Corps attended the training to support and monitor members as they exited the ice. The Ladies Auxiliary provided a warm meal for everyone after the training concluded.
