| As Daylight Saving Time begins on March 8, 2026, fire officials urge residents to take this opportunity to test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home and business. For traditional units, it is important to replace batteries to ensure devices are fully operational. Officials also recommend confirming that all detectors are not expired, which means they are less than 10 years old, and replacing any 10-year sealed units if they emit a chirping sound. Key safety actions include replacing 9-volt or other replaceable batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Residents should press the test button on each unit to verify proper function. Check the date of manufacture, located on the back of each detector, and replace any device that is older than 10 years. It is also essential to have a working detector on every level of the home, and outside each sleeping area. If your home is equipped with newer units that have non-replaceable 10-year batteries, make sure these devices are not chirping and remain within their intended lifespan. Taking these steps helps protect families and homes by ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are ready to alert occupants in an emergency. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES! |
