| To our residence and community members of the Montrose Fire District.
Following recent tragedies in our two neighboring departments where we provided assistance, we want to remind our community about basic safety precautions in the home. Please ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and tested regularly. There should be at least one detector on each floor of your residence, as well as one near any sleeping areas. Detectors sold after April 2019 should have a sealed 10-year battery life, while older units still in use should have their batteries replaced every six months until April 2029 or until the unit reaches 10 years from its manufacturing date, at which point it recommended to be replaced. The typical lifespan of each detector is about 10 years.
Additionally, keep a working fire extinguisher near your stove or cooking devices and check the service dates regularly. Review and practice the national standards of Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH) with your family. Everyone should know two exit points from the residence and have a designated meeting spot outside. Once outside, do not go back inside. If possible, keep doors closed within the home to help prevent fire from spreading from room to room.
