| During Monday night training, members had the opportunity to learn from instructors with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services. The instructors provided an overview and guidance on using department equipment for vehicle stabilization. Members were divided into two groups for hands-on practice.
The first group used farm jacks to lift the front end of a car positioned on its roof, learning to stabilize the vehicle to assist with the safe removal of someone who might be trapped underneath. The second group worked on stabilizing a vehicle that had rolled onto its side, using air struts, ratchet straps, and chains. Instructors demonstrated proper setup techniques, and members practiced breaking down and reassembling the equipment independently.
The department thanks Westchester County Department of Emergency Services for visiting Montrose Fire Department and hosting this training session. This class also prepares members for an upcoming drill scheduled at the end of the month, where instructors will return to teach a "Pinned & Burning" class. In that session, members will build on the skills learned and use extrication tools to safely remove patients from vehicles.
