Advanced Vehicle Extrication Training

By Captain Michael Hrycko
June 29, 2026

On Sunday morning, Montrose Fire Department members participated in a "Pinned & Burning" training class alongside firefighters from Buchanan, Croton, and Verplanck, organized by instructors from the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services. The training involved splitting the departments into groups and rotating through multiple stations, each focused on developing different firefighting and rescue skills.

Some scenarios included learning how to move a car that was pinned against a concrete barrier to safely extricate trapped patients, providing fresh breathing air to victims stuck inside burning vehicles, and using webbing systems for quick and safe removals. The training also covered techniques for stabilizing vehicles that had rolled onto their sides or roofs, using firefighting foam with various hose lines, and proper use of extrication tools for opening vehicle doors.

This training session was made possible through the support of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services and the donation of vehicles by Brookfield of Elmsford and Castle Auto & Towing of Chappaqua. Their contributions allowed all participants to gain valuable hands-on experience.

The Montrose Fire District appreciates the involvement of Buchanan, Croton, and Verplanck fire departments in this training and looks forward to continued cooperation at future calls and training sessions.

Individuals interested in joining the department are encouraged to use the "Join Our Team" button on the website.
